My Story
It was always books.
There was a day in kindergarten when our teachers invited us to read a book in front of the class. I was so excited. I jumped up with my favorite tome at the time—Blueberries for Sal, of course—and charged forward as the first volunteer.
I sat on the stool confidently in front of the story-time rug with the hardcover book cutting into my bright purple leggings. I quickly shifted my disheveled, waist-length hair behind my shoulder and cracked her open in front of my class.
But there was one problem—I couldn’t read.
Now, I realize five years old is a bit early to have story-time leadership on a resume. I didn’t get embarrassed or run away. I didn’t actually even admit that I didn’t know how to read. I sat up there, looked at the pages, and told a story, page by page. And I loved it.
Looking back, I can see our teachers just wanted us to start enjoying books and sharing them with each other; they didn’t mind if we didn’t know every word, or any word for that matter. And I am so grateful for them, because this may come as a surprise, but I did learn to read.
It actually became the thing I was best at, my badge of honor of sorts. From about ten years old on, I knew I’d work with books.
After thousands of library trips, hundreds of devoured novels, and some intense honors and AP English classes, I went off to get my English literature degree. I got a lot of judgment for studying what many called an “impractical” major. But I knew it was where I was meant to be—and I was right.
I got my first publishing job right out of college, and I haven’t stopped working on books since. I am so lucky to get to work with dozens of publishers, hundreds of authors, and countless “book people” every day.
With 200+ books in print, more than 8,000,000 words reviewed, and 13+ years under my belt, I still squeal a little each time I open up a new manuscript. Will yours be next?
xoxo Rebecca
